First NWG meeting in Bangladesh

The first national working group meeting in Bangladesh took place today in Dhaka. Eleven participants, representing the Supreme Court, civil society, journalism, academia, police, and armed forces came together to discuss SSG challenges and opportunities.

Several themes were discussed, such as the lack of capacity of existing security actors to enforce laws and do so with proper training and equipment. Other main themes included the inclusiveness of security actors and gender representation along with general discussions about participative governance, the rule of law, accountability mechanisms and transparency, media oversight, effectiveness, the role of consensus, and the responsiveness of security actors.
