5th IPF-SSG Workshop
- Topic: Defence Procurement in Southeast Asia: Parliamentary Perspectives
- Start: 12 Oct 2008
- End: 13 Oct 2008
- Phnom Penh, Cambodia
The topic of this workshop was the role of parliaments in defence procurement. Defence procurement is the process by which national defence authorities acquire the equipment and services necessary to fulfill their mission. Parliamentary involvement in defence procurement is an important function of legislatures to ensure that governments are held accountable for defence and security policy. Yet, up to the date of the workshop, there had been limited systemic comparison of defence procurement processes in Southeast Asia and the role of parliaments in this area. The workshop additionally discussed the ASEAN Regional Forum and recent experiences in transitional justice in Southeast Asia, with an emphasis on Cambodia.
