11th IPF-SSG Workshop
- Topic: Security Sector Reform and Democratization in Southeast Asia: What Role for Parliaments?
- Start: 15 Jun 2013
- End: 16 Jun 2013
- Bangkok, Thailand
This workshop examined the role of security sector reform in the context of democratization. A comparative analysis of democratization countries engaged in security sector reform shows that where democratization has stalled, so have reforms in the security sector. Democratic consolidation has usually fared better where security sector reform has brought about the definitive exclusion of security forces from politics. This workshop drew on experiences made in, and lessons to be learned from, Southeast Asian countries. In particular, it involved exchanges of experiences and fostering dialogue about the challenges and opportunities for a role of parliament in security sector reform in the context of democratization.
